Best AI tools for students in 2026: free plans and the rules
The best AI tools for students in 2026, with free and education plans checked on vendor pages, plus how to use them without breaking academic integrity rules.
The best AI tools for students in 2026 combine a general assistant for explanations and practice with a few specialist tools for writing, coding and organising. Several now offer free or education plans. Google gives eligible US college students a year of Google AI Pro, GitHub gives verified students Copilot at no cost, and Notion offers a free Education Plan. Which tools you can use for which assignments, though, is decided by your instructor and your university, not by the tool’s pricing page.
How we compiled this list: We built it from each vendor’s official documentation and pricing pages and from public reviews, as checked on 4 Oct 2026. We did not test these tools hands-on for this article. Prices and features change often, so confirm details on the vendor’s site before you buy. See our editorial policy and advertising disclosure.
Key takeaways
- Check student plans before paying. We verified free education offers from Google (Gemini), GitHub (Copilot), Notion and Figma on their own pages on 4 October 2026.
- Read the small print. Google’s US student offer must be redeemed by 31 December 2026, needs a payment method, and renews at $19.99 a month unless you cancel.
- Use tutoring features rather than answer machines. ChatGPT’s Study Mode and the learning tools in Claude and Gemini are built to make you work through problems.
- Know your institution’s rule. Stanford, for example, treats unattributed AI help like help from another person unless the instructor says otherwise.
- AI detectors are not proof. Turnitin itself says its detector is not zero-error and that it does not decide whether misconduct took place.
How students are actually using AI
Use is growing quickly from a low base. A Pew Research Center survey of 1,391 US teens aged 13 to 17, conducted in autumn 2024, found that 26% had used ChatGPT for schoolwork, double the 13% recorded in 2023. Teens drew clear lines: 54% said it was acceptable to use ChatGPT to research new topics, but only 18% said the same about writing essays, and 42% said essay-writing with it was not acceptable.
That split is a good guide for choosing tools. The useful category for most students is AI that explains, quizzes and gives feedback. The risky category is AI that produces work you then submit as your own.
General AI assistants with student-friendly plans
Google Gemini (free student plan)
Google’s US student page offers eligible US college students aged 18 and over a free Google AI Pro plan for one year. Students whose 2025 trial has ended can also qualify, and eligibility has to be re-verified each year. The plan includes four times higher Gemini usage limits, 5 TB of storage, Gemini Spark and access to the Gemini Omni video model, along with study notebooks built from your own course materials, personalised quizzes and a performance tracker. The offer must be redeemed by 31 December 2026 and requires a valid payment method. Unless cancelled, it renews at $19.99 a month.
Terms differ by country. On the Indian version of the page, the free year converts to Google AI Plus at ₹399 a month after it ends. Check your local page before signing up and set a reminder to cancel if you don’t want to pay.
ChatGPT (Study Mode)
OpenAI launched Study Mode in July 2025. According to TechCrunch, it was rolled out to logged-in users on the Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans, and to Edu subscribers later. In Study Mode, ChatGPT asks questions to test your understanding and sometimes withholds direct answers until you engage with the material. The limitation is obvious: students can switch back to the normal mode at any time. OpenAI’s pricing pages blocked our automated check, so we have not listed current ChatGPT prices here. Confirm them on OpenAI’s site.
Claude (free plan and university Education plan)
Anthropic’s pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 that includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and memory. Pro costs $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) or $20 billed monthly. Anthropic does not list an individual student discount. Instead it sells an Education plan to institutions, covering students, faculty and staff, with what it calls “academic research and learning mode”. If your university has signed up, use that rather than paying yourself.

Specialist tools worth adding
GitHub Copilot for computer science students
GitHub Education gives verified students GitHub Copilot Student free of charge, plus a free GitHub Pro account and the Student Developer Pack of partner offers. To qualify you must be at least 13, enrolled in a course that leads to a degree or diploma, and able to show a school email address or dated proof of enrolment. For anyone learning to code, this is the most valuable free AI offer available. Check whether your course allows AI coding help on graded work before you use it there.
Notion for notes and planning
Notion’s Education Plan is free for students and educators at accredited colleges and universities who sign in with a school email address. Notion says it does not accept student IDs as verification, and the plan is not available to K-12 students. It includes unlimited pages and blocks, file uploads and 30-day version history. Notion’s page does not say whether its AI add-on is included, so assume AI features may cost extra.
Grammarly for writing feedback
Grammarly’s plans page lists a Free tier that catches spelling and grammar mistakes, shows tone and includes 100 AI prompts. The paid Plus tier adds full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism and AI-text detection, and 2,000 prompts. When we checked from India, Plus was listed at ₹392 per member per month billed annually (an India-specific plan). Prices vary by region. Use it for feedback on your own drafts. Letting it rewrite whole paragraphs can breach rules on authorship.
Khanmigo for tutoring
Khan Academy’s Khanmigo is free for teachers and costs $4 a month or $44 a year for parents and learners. It is designed as a tutor that guides students to answers rather than giving them, which makes it a good fit for school-age learners.
Figma for design and group projects
Figma for Education makes Figma and FigJam free for students and teachers who sign up with a school email. It is useful for design courses, presentations and team brainstorming. Its page does not say how many AI credits education accounts receive.

Academic integrity: the rules that actually apply
No global rule covers student AI use. Policy is set course by course, so the first step is always to read your syllabus. Some anchors help.
University policy. Stanford’s generative AI policy guidance, adopted in February 2023, is widely cited. Unless an instructor says otherwise, using generative AI “shall be treated analogously to assistance from another person”. Using it to “substantially complete an assignment or exam” is not allowed, and students should acknowledge any non-incidental use and “default to disclosing” when unsure. Instructors can loosen or tighten the rule for their own courses.
Age limits. UNESCO’s guidance, published in September 2023, sets an age limit of 13 for using AI tools in the classroom and asks governments to adopt data-protection and privacy standards. Many vendors set their own minimum ages too. Google’s US student offer, for example, is for students aged 18 and over.
Detection. Universities increasingly use AI-writing detectors, but these tools make mistakes. In a March 2023 post, Turnitin said it aims for a false positive rate below 1% for documents, admitted the rate “is not zero”, and said it does not determine misconduct. That judgement rests with instructors. If you are flagged unfairly, your drafts, version history and notes are your best evidence. Writing in Google Docs, Notion or another tool that keeps version history helps.

A simple way to use AI without crossing the line
- Before you start: read the course AI policy. If it is unclear, email the instructor and keep the reply.
- When learning: ask AI to explain concepts, generate practice questions or check your working. Avoid pasting in graded questions.
- When writing: draft in your own words first, then ask for feedback on structure or clarity. Do not ask for replacement text.
- When researching: treat AI citations as leads, not sources. Open and read every paper you cite, because AI tools can invent references.
- When submitting: add a short note on which tools you used and how, if your course asks for one or you are unsure.
- Protect your data: don’t upload other people’s personal data, unpublished research or exam papers to consumer AI tools.

Bottom line
For most students, the strongest free setup in 2026 is one general assistant (Gemini on the student plan if you qualify, or the free tier of ChatGPT or Claude), plus GitHub Copilot if you code and Notion for organising. Use their tutoring modes, keep your drafts and follow your course rules. Those habits will matter more than any single tool, and they carry over to work. FAQ
Is Gemini free for students?
Eligible students can get Google AI Pro free for one year. In the US the offer is for college students aged 18 and over, must be redeemed by 31 December 2026, and renews at $19.99 a month unless cancelled. Terms vary by country.
Is using ChatGPT for homework cheating?
It depends on your course policy. Many universities, including Stanford by default, treat AI help like help from another person: fine for some tasks, not allowed for completing graded work, and to be disclosed when used.
Can teachers detect AI-written essays?
They can flag them with detectors such as Turnitin, but Turnitin says its false positive rate is not zero and that instructors, not software, decide whether misconduct occurred.
Do students get GitHub Copilot for free?
Yes. Verified students get GitHub Copilot Student free through GitHub Education. They must be at least 13, enrolled in a degree or diploma course, and able to prove it with a school email or dated documents.
What is the best free AI tool for studying?
A general assistant with a tutoring mode, such as Gemini, ChatGPT Study Mode or Claude, covers most needs. Add specialist tools only for specific jobs like coding or proofreading.
