Vaccitech was a biotechnology company spun out of the University of Oxford’s Jenner Institute in 2016. Its early work included the co-invention and early development of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria. The company later listed on Nasdaq.
On 6 November 2023 Vaccitech announced that it had changed its name to Barinthus Biotherapeutics, trading under the ticker BRNS from 7 November. The company said the old name suggested a purely vaccine-focused business, while its work had moved to T-cell immunotherapies for infectious diseases, autoimmunity and cancer. The new name comes from a figure in the Arthurian legends described as a guide and navigator. The old vaccitech.co.uk address now redirects to barinthusbio.com.
In 2026 the company’s lead programme is VTP-1000, an experimental treatment for coeliac disease. Barinthus said enrolment in the Phase 1 AVALON trial was complete with 42 subjects, and that topline data from its multiple-ascending-dose part were expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. For the second quarter of 2026 it reported a net loss of $10.6 million and cash of $59.6 million at 30 June.
On 30 September 2025 Barinthus and Clywedog Therapeutics announced an all-stock merger. Under the original terms, Barinthus shareholders would own about 34% of the combined company and Clywedog’s about 66%; the combined business would be renamed Clywedog Therapeutics and trade on Nasdaq as CLYD. The merger agreement was amended in February 2026, and the company’s later filings still describe the deal as pending. We have not seen confirmation that it has closed.
