Ophelia is a US telehealth company that treats opioid addiction from home. Patients meet a licensed clinician by video and, if eligible, are prescribed buprenorphine (best known by the brand name Suboxone), a medication that eases cravings and withdrawal. Ophelia calls this medication-assisted treatment. HIT Consultant reported that its care model adapts the Massachusetts Collaborative Care Model to telemedicine, pairing each patient with a team that includes a prescribing clinician, a nurse and a care coordinator.
Ophelia’s pricing page says its self-pay plan costs $245 a month and covers all clinician video calls, Suboxone medication management if eligible, seven-day-a-week support from the care team, comfort medication for withdrawal symptoms, and treatment of depression, anxiety and insomnia. Ophelia is in network with many insurers, including Medicaid, Medicare, Cigna, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, Anthem and UnitedHealthcare, depending on state. When we checked, it listed care as available in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
The company is based in New York City and was co-founded by CEO Zack Gray. In December 2021 it raised a $50 million Series B led by Tiger Global, with Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, Refactor Capital and others, seven months after a $15 million Series A, for total funding of $68 million, HIT Consultant reported. In 2023 Ophelia published a study in The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse of 1,378 patients in New York and Pennsylvania, which found 56.4% were still in treatment after 180 days; this is the company’s own research.
