The best AI customer support tool for most startups in 2026 is the one that plugs into the helpdesk you already use and charges per resolved conversation: Intercom Fin, Zendesk’s AI agents, Freshworks Freddy, Help Scout AI Answers and Gorgias (for online stores) all publish prices you can model today. Decagon and Sierra are the enterprise picks, with no public price list. Below we compare them on pricing model, setup effort and fit, using each vendor’s own pricing page as of 4 October 2026.

How we compiled this list: We built it from each vendor’s official documentation and pricing pages and from public reviews, as checked on 7 October 2026. We did not test these tools hands-on for this article. Prices and features change often, so confirm details on the vendor’s site before you buy. See our editorial policy and advertising disclosure.

Key takeaways

  • Pricing has moved from seats to outcomes: Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome, Help Scout $0.75 per AI resolution and Gorgias $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction, according to their pricing pages.
  • Zendesk and Freshdesk bundle a small allowance of AI resolutions or sessions into every plan, then charge for extra volume.
  • Decagon and Sierra sell to large companies on custom contracts; Sierra says it uses outcome-based pricing.
  • The cheapest tool on paper is not the cheapest in practice. Your real cost depends on how the vendor defines a “resolution” and how many conversations it actually closes.
  • This article contains no affiliate links, and no vendor paid to be included.

How we chose these tools

We started from the products founders ask us about most and kept the ones that meet five tests. Each one has an AI agent that answers customers on its own today, not on a roadmap. Each one either publishes prices or clearly says it doesn’t. A small team can switch it on without a long services project, or the vendor is important enough at the enterprise end that buyers will meet it anyway. Each one fits a common helpdesk or works on top of one. And each one sells internationally, so a team in Bengaluru, Berlin or Boston can buy it.

Every price below comes from the vendor’s own pricing page, read on 4 October 2026, and is in US dollars unless stated. Prices can differ by country, currency, tax and billing period, and vendors change them often, so check the live page before you sign. Funding figures come from news reports, with the outlet and date. 100Xfounder has no affiliate or commercial relationship with any company named here.

Plug-in AI agents with public pricing

Intercom Fin

Fin is the reference point for per-outcome pricing. Intercom’s pricing page lists Fin at $0.99 per outcome on every plan. It counts an outcome when a customer confirms the answer solved the problem, when they don’t ask for more help after Fin replies, or when Fin completes a workflow, and it charges once per conversation even if Fin answers several questions. Fin can also run on its own on top of another helpdesk such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk, with a minimum monthly commitment. If you want Intercom’s full inbox as well, seats cost $29 (Essential), $85 (Advanced) or $132 (Expert) per month on monthly billing. Voice is priced separately, at $1.99 per voice outcome.

Intercom says Fin resolves 76% of conversations on average across more than 12,000 customers. That is the company’s own figure, so treat it as a ceiling to test against rather than a promise. For early-stage teams, Intercom advertises an Early Stage programme with 93% off for startups that have raised under $10 million and have 15 or fewer employees.

Zendesk AI agents

Zendesk bundles AI agents into its plans and bills them by “automated resolution”. According to its pricing page, Suite Team costs US$55 per agent per month paid yearly (US$69 monthly), and Suite Professional costs US$115 (US$149 monthly). Support Team, the entry ticketing plan, is US$19 paid yearly. Team plans include 5 automated resolutions per agent per month and Professional includes 10. Beyond that you can commit to a volume in advance or pay US$2.00 per resolution as you go. Copilot, Zendesk’s assistant for human agents, costs another US$50 per agent per month on annual billing.

The bundled allowance is small. A five-agent team on Suite Team gets 25 automated resolutions a month, so any serious deflection programme will run on paid resolutions. If you’re already on Zendesk, the attraction is that the AI uses your existing macros, knowledge base and reporting.

Freshworks Freddy AI

Freshdesk is the cheapest full helpdesk here with an AI agent included. Freshworks lists Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent per month, billed annually. Each plan includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions, and further sessions cost $49 per 100. Freddy AI Copilot, which drafts and summarises for human agents, is a $29 per agent per month add-on on Pro and Enterprise.

Help Scout AI Answers

Help Scout suits small teams whose support is mostly email and help-centre articles. Its free plan covers up to five users. On the annual-billing view, paid plans are listed at $25 (Standard), $45 (Plus) and $75 (Pro) per user per month. AI Answers, its autonomous agent, is an add-on at $0.75 per resolution with a three-month free trial. Writing help (AI Assist) comes with paid plans, and AI Drafts and AI Summarize are unlimited on Plus and Pro.

Gorgias AI Agent

Gorgias is built for online stores, especially on Shopify, where many questions are about orders, returns and shipping. Its plans are priced by ticket volume: Starter is $10 a month for 50 tickets, Basic is $50 a month on annual billing for 300 tickets, and Pro is $300 a month on annual billing for 2,000 tickets. The AI Agent costs $0.90 per automated interaction on an annual contract or $1.00 on a monthly one, and each automated interaction also counts as a helpdesk ticket, so it uses up your plan allowance too.

AI agents inside your CRM

HubSpot Customer Agent

If your sales and marketing already run in HubSpot, its Customer Agent keeps support data in the same CRM. HubSpot’s Service Hub page lists Starter at $7 per seat per month on an annual commitment ($20 monthly), Professional at $90 ($100 monthly) and Enterprise from $150. Professional and Enterprise carry one-time onboarding fees of $1,500 and $3,500. AI usage draws on HubSpot Credits: 500 a month on Starter, 3,000 on Professional and 5,000 on Enterprise, with more at $0.010 per credit. HubSpot offers new Professional and Enterprise subscribers 14 days of unlimited Customer Agent use, a useful window to test it on real traffic.

Salesforce Agentforce for Service

Agentforce is the option for companies already deep in Salesforce. Service Cloud runs from a $25 Starter Suite to $550 per user per month for the top tier on annual billing. The top tier includes Agentforce for Service and 2.75 million Flex Credits per org per year, according to Salesforce’s pricing page. On lower tiers Agentforce is listed as available to buy. For most seed-stage startups this is more platform than they need. For a Series B company with Salesforce already in place, it avoids adding another vendor.

Enterprise AI agents: Decagon, Sierra and others

Decagon

Decagon builds AI agents for large consumer brands across chat, email and voice. Instead of hand-built decision trees, it uses “Agent Operating Procedures”, which are written in plain language. Its website names customers including Duolingo, Chime and Ticketmaster and publishes no prices; buyers book a demo. In January 2026 Decagon raised $250 million at a $4.5 billion valuation in a round led by Coatue and Index Ventures, according to Built In San Francisco, roughly triple its previous valuation.

Sierra

Sierra, co-founded by Bret Taylor, deploys agents across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email and voice. Its website says it charges on outcomes, meaning customers pay when the agent does the job, and names customers including SiriusXM and Rocket Mortgage. It also offers Ghostwriter, an “agent-building agent” that drafts agents from standard operating procedures or call transcripts. TechCrunch reported in May 2026 that Sierra raised $950 million at a valuation above $15 billion, and that its annual recurring revenue had reached $150 million by early February.

Both suit businesses with very high volumes, complex back-end systems and a budget for a proper rollout. A 10-person startup will usually get further, faster, with a plug-in agent.

Ada and Kustomer

Ada sells an AI agent platform across voice, messaging and email and asks prospects to book a demo for pricing. Kustomer says on its pricing page that it doesn’t post one-size-fits-all prices, and offers an ROI calculator instead.

How to evaluate an AI support agent before you buy

Vendors’ headline resolution rates are measured in different ways, so test the tool on your own conversations before you trust any number.

  • Read the resolution definition. Intercom counts a conversation where the customer doesn’t ask for more help after Fin’s answer; Gorgias bills each automated interaction as a ticket. Write down exactly which events you’ll be billed for.
  • Replay past tickets. Export a few hundred recent conversations, run them through a trial, and have a senior agent grade the answers for accuracy and tone. Look closely at refunds, billing and account access, where a wrong answer is expensive.
  • Test the hand-off to humans. Check that the AI passes the full conversation history to a human, that customers can always reach a person, and that escalation rules are easy to change.
  • Model cost at your volume. Multiply expected monthly conversations by a realistic resolution rate and the per-outcome price, then compare that with the cost of seats you’d otherwise add.
  • Check data controls. Ask where conversation data is stored, whether it’s used to train models, and how the vendor supports GDPR in the EU and UK and India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act. Confirm details with your own legal adviser.
  • Fix your knowledge base first. Every tool here answers from your help-centre articles and past replies. Outdated articles produce confident wrong answers.

Bottom line: which tool should your startup pick?

Pre-seed or seed, under five support people: start with whatever your helpdesk offers natively. Help Scout’s free plan plus AI Answers, Freshdesk Growth with its 500 included sessions, or Intercom (worth applying for its Early Stage discount) will get you live in days. Ecommerce brands should look at Gorgias first because of its order and Shopify integrations. Series A and B SaaS companies with a few thousand conversations a month should run a head-to-head trial of Fin and Zendesk’s AI agents on the same set of past tickets. Large consumer companies with heavy voice traffic should talk to Decagon, Sierra and Ada, and expect a longer evaluation.

Whatever you choose, keep a human in the loop on sensitive topics, track customer satisfaction on AI-handled conversations separately, and review the bill monthly. If you’re hiring for support or AI roles as you scale, our jobs board lists openings from official careers pages.

AI support agents are now cheap enough to test at almost any stage; under a dollar per resolved conversation is common among tools with public pricing. The real differences are how each vendor counts a resolution, how cleanly the AI hands off to people, and whether it fits your helpdesk. FAQ

What is the cheapest AI customer support tool for a startup?

Among tools with public pricing, Help Scout’s AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution and Freshdesk includes 500 Freddy AI sessions on its $19 Growth plan (annual billing), according to their pricing pages as of October 2026. The cheapest option for you depends on your volume and how often the AI actually resolves conversations.

How much does Intercom Fin cost?

Intercom lists Fin at $0.99 per outcome, charged at most once per conversation. Intercom helpdesk seats are extra if you use them, from $29 per seat per month on monthly billing. Fin voice outcomes cost $1.99.

Does Zendesk charge for AI resolutions?

Yes. Zendesk plans include 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent per month, depending on plan. After that you buy committed volumes or pay US$2.00 per resolution as you go.

How much do Sierra and Decagon cost?

Neither publishes prices. Both sell custom enterprise contracts after a demo; Sierra says its pricing is outcome-based.

Will an AI agent replace my support team?

Not entirely. These tools handle repetitive questions well, but complex, sensitive or high-value cases still need people, and every vendor here supports handing conversations to a human.
