What SWORD Health does

Sword Health, now branded simply as Sword, is a digital health company that started as a virtual physical therapist and now sells what it calls AI Care: programmes in which an AI care specialist named Phoenix guides members through sessions in the Sword app while licensed human clinicians oversee the care plan. Its website lists four programmes: Thrive for muscle and joint pain through digital physical therapy, Bloom for women’s health from fertility to menopause, Pulse for cardiometabolic risks such as blood pressure, weight and glucose, and Mind for mental health. Sword sells to employers and health plans, which offer it to their members; individuals usually enrol through a benefit.

Virgílio Bento is the Portuguese company’s founder and CEO. Tech.eu reported in June 2025 that Sword had more than 500,000 members across three continents, 6.5 million AI sessions completed since 2020 and more than 1,000 enterprise clients.

Funding and deals

On 17 June 2025 TechCrunch reported a $40 million round led by General Catalyst at a $4 billion valuation, up from $3 billion a year earlier, bringing total funding to $380 million. TechCrunch said Sword had a $240 million annual revenue run rate, was cash-flow positive, and that Bento was now aiming for an IPO around 2028. In August 2026 STAT reported, from a regulatory filing, that Sword planned to acquire Headspace, the mental health app; Sword’s site now announces that it is acquiring Headspace.

Pricing

Sword does not publish prices. Employers and health plans buy it under contract; members get access through those benefits, and organisations contact Sword’s sales team for terms.

Who it suits

It suits HR benefits teams and health plans looking to cut musculoskeletal, women’s health, cardiometabolic or mental health costs. Individuals without a sponsoring employer or plan may find it harder to access.
