Smooth Recorder is a native macOS app for recording product demos and tutorials. As you record, it zooms in where you click, smooths the cursor, makes captions on your Mac and puts the result on a background, so the clip looks edited when you press stop. You can cut the video by deleting words from its transcript, and the same capture shortcut also takes screenshots, scrolling captures, GIFs and text from the screen.
It is sold as a one-time licence rather than a subscription and needs macOS 15 or later. According to its site, captions, text recognition and redaction run on your Mac and nothing is uploaded.
Smooth Recorder was made by Mohd Anas and launched on Product Hunt on 4 October 2026, where it finished #3 for the day with 252 upvotes and 22 comments.
We have not tested Smooth Recorder ourselves. This page brings together its official site, its Product Hunt page and the official pages of the products it is compared with, and says where each fact comes from.
What people use Smooth Recorder for
- Recording a product demo or walkthrough that needs zooms and captions without a separate editing pass
- Making short tutorials and cutting mistakes by deleting words from the transcript
- Taking screenshots for docs or social posts, with redaction of emails, cards or API keys before sharing
- Capturing long pages with scrolling capture, or turning a short clip into a GIF
The launch story
Mohd Anas says he built Smooth Recorder because recording a product demo was always the easy part. The editing took him about an hour each time: zooming into clicks, hiding a shaky cursor, adding captions and placing the clip on a background so it didn't look like a raw screen recording.
His answer was an app that does those steps while you record. At launch he listed auto zoom that follows the cursor, 3D tilt during zooms (new in version 1.1), a smooth cursor, a camera bubble, captions generated on the Mac with transcript editing, and one-shortcut screenshots placed on a wallpaper. He stressed that it is a native SwiftUI app, not a web app in a window.
He launched it in early access at $9 once, with no subscription and no account, and asked people what they record and what to build next. That first tier has since sold out; see the pricing below.

What users liked, asked and criticised
- Recordings that already look edited, thanks to auto zoom and the smooth cursor
- Editing video by editing the transcript
- Native, local processing and a one-time price
- Whether it can record a voice-over (it can: pick a microphone from the recording bar)
- How on-device captions cope with an Indian English accent and long recordings
- Whether a zoom can be moved after recording, and how it compares with CleanShot
- Whether a Windows version is coming
- A small grab area for dragging clip edges on the timeline
- An undo button that reverts all edits on a clip without asking first
- Clicking a clip on the timeline doesn't always select it
Smooth Recorder genuinely holds its own against them and in a few areas, I actually prefer it.
I love the product and bought it.
I just lost like 30 minutes of cutting work because I understood the undo button to be a "undo your last action"
How do the on device captions hold up on a long recording with an accent, say Indian English?
Can a zoom be moved after the fact?

Frequently asked questions
How much does Smooth Recorder cost?
On 14 October 2026 it cost $19 once in early access, for the next 100 buyers. The first 100 licences at $9 are sold out, and the site gives $69 as the regular price. There is no subscription.
Is there a free trial or a refund?
No. The site offers no trial, and its terms say all sales are final. The maker asks you to email if something isn't working.
Which Macs does it run on?
Macs running macOS 15 Sequoia or later. One licence works on one Mac at a time, and you can deactivate it in Settings to move it.
Can I add a voice-over?
Yes. The maker explained on Product Hunt that when you pick an area to record, you click the mic chip on the bar under it and choose your microphone.
Do captions work offline, and with an Indian English accent?
Captions are made on your Mac. On macOS 26, the first time you make captions it downloads Apple's speech model, then works offline. The maker suggests setting your Mac's language and region to English (India) for the Indian English model. You can click any caption to fix a word.
Is there a Windows version?
Not yet. The maker said on Product Hunt that Windows is on the roadmap but the focus for now is the Mac version.
How is it different from Screen Studio?
Smooth Recorder's own FAQ says the main differences are the one-time price instead of a subscription and the built-in screenshot, scrolling-capture and text-capture tools. Screen Studio costs $9 a month billed yearly or $29 month to month.
