Best AI writing tools in 2026 for founders and marketers, compared
We compare ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Notion AI, Jasper, Copy.ai, Writer and Grammarly on price, team features and data controls for 2026.
For most founders and small marketing teams in 2026, the best AI writing setup is one general assistant (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, each about $20 a month for an individual) plus the AI already built into your documents tool. Dedicated marketing platforms such as Jasper, Copy.ai and Writer earn their price only when several people need shared brand voice, approvals and repeatable workflows. Every price below was checked on the vendor’s own page on 4 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Entry paid plans for the big three assistants cluster around $20 a month: ChatGPT Plus is $20, Claude Pro is $20 monthly or $17 a month billed annually, and Google AI Pro is $19.99.
- If your team already pays for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, check the built-in AI first. Microsoft lists Copilot Business at $21 per user a month (promotionally $18 until 31 December 2026), and Gemini in Docs comes with Workspace Business Standard.
- Jasper Pro costs $69 a month ($59 billed annually) and suits marketers who need brand voices and campaign workflows, not occasional blog drafts.
- Google says AI-written pages are fine if they add value, but mass-producing pages without value can breach its scaled content abuse policy. The FTC has acted against an AI tool that generated fake reviews.
How we chose and compared these tools
We did not run lab benchmarks, and we take no affiliate fees from any company named here. This guide compares what each vendor publishes about price, features and data handling, read on its official pricing or help pages on 4 October 2026. We used five criteria that matter to a founder or a two-to-ten-person marketing team:
- Published price. Can you see what it costs without a sales call? Tools with “contact sales” pricing are flagged as such.
- Fit for real marketing work. Long-form drafts, landing pages, emails, social posts, rewriting and research, not just chat.
- Where it lives. A tool inside the documents app your team already uses gets used more than a separate tab.
- Team and data controls. Shared workspaces, admin controls and whether your content may be used for model training.
- Regional availability. Several vendors show different prices by country, so we note where a figure is a local price.
Prices change often and many vendors run introductory discounts. Treat the figures below as a snapshot and check the linked page before you buy.

General-purpose assistants: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
A general assistant is where most founders should start. It handles first drafts, rewrites, outlines, customer research summaries and the odd investor update, and it costs less than a single freelance blog post a month.
ChatGPT
According to OpenAI’s pricing page, ChatGPT has a free tier, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100 a month. Plus adds projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded deep research and longer memory, which are the features that matter for repeatable marketing work such as a weekly newsletter. The page notes that Go “may include ads”. The same page describes Business and Enterprise plans for organisations, priced per user, with Business available from two users. On the individual plans, OpenAI’s comparison table says content can be used to train its models, with an opt-out available, so switch that setting off before pasting in customer or unreleased product material.
Claude
Anthropic lists Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month on annual billing, with Projects, Claude Code and its document, slide and design features included. Max plans start at $100 a month for heavier use. The Team plan costs $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, with single sign-on and central billing. Anthropic changed its consumer terms in August 2025 so that users of Free, Pro and Max choose whether their chats can be used for model training, according to its announcement; the change did not apply to commercial plans such as Claude for Work or the API.

Gemini
Google’s AI plans page lists Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year in the US, bundled with 5 TB of storage. Pro includes Gemini in Gmail and Docs, expanded Deep Research and Gemini Notebook. A cheaper Google AI Plus tier and a higher Ultra tier also exist. Prices vary by country: Google’s Gemini subscriptions page, viewed from India, listed AI Plus at ₹399 and AI Pro at ₹1,950 a month.
AI inside the tools your team already uses
For many startups the cheapest upgrade is the one built into an existing subscription. Writing happens in documents and email, so assistants that sit there save the copy-and-paste step.
Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft’s Copilot pricing page lists Microsoft 365 Copilot Business as an add-on at $21 per user a month, paid yearly, discounted to $18 for the first year between 1 July and 31 December 2026 for existing customers on an eligible Business plan. Bundles are also offered: Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50 and Business Premium with Copilot at $32 per user a month. Microsoft says Copilot works across Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams and Loop. Solo founders can look at the consumer route instead: Microsoft 365 Personal is $99.99 a year and includes Copilot in the desktop apps, with higher AI limits on the $199.99 Premium plan.
Google Workspace with Gemini
On Google Workspace’s pricing page, Business Starter ($7 per user a month at standard pricing) includes Gemini in Gmail only, while Business Standard ($14) adds Gemini in Docs, Meet and other apps. Google’s Docs help page says Gemini can draft and edit text, create documents, summarise Drive files and Gmail messages, and reference other files while you write.
Notion AI
Notion’s pricing page shows Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member a month on monthly billing. Free and Plus get only a trial of Notion AI; full access, including the Notion Agent and AI meeting notes, comes with Business. If your content calendar, briefs and drafts already live in Notion, that is a reasonable place to pay for AI.
Marketing-specific platforms: Jasper, Copy.ai and Writer
These tools are built around brand consistency and workflows rather than open-ended chat. They make sense when more than one person writes for the brand and you want the same voice, facts and approval steps every time.

Jasper
Jasper’s Pro plan costs $69 per seat a month, or $59 billed annually, with a seven-day free trial. It includes two brand voices, five knowledge assets, three audience profiles, image generation, a browser extension and “core marketing workflow agents”. The custom-priced Business plan adds an agent builder, API access, single sign-on and a 12-month minimum term.
Copy.ai
Copy.ai has repositioned towards go-to-market workflows. Its Chat plan costs $29 a month ($24 annually) and covers five seats, unlimited words in chat and access to OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models. The next tier, Growth, jumps to $1,000 a month billed annually, so for most early-stage teams only the Chat plan is relevant.
Writer
Writer offers a Starter plan for up to five users with a 14-day free trial, playbooks and a team “personality” profile, and an Enterprise plan with custom pricing, SAML single sign-on and HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II compliance available. It is aimed at larger companies that need governance; a seed-stage startup will rarely need it.
Editing and polish: Grammarly
Grammarly is less a drafting tool than a safety net that works in your browser, email and documents. Its plans page showed us India pricing: a free tier with 100 AI prompts a month, and Plus at ₹392 per member a month billed annually (₹1,000 billed monthly), with 2,000 AI prompts, full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment and plagiarism and AI-text detection. Prices differ by country, so check the page from your own location.

The rules marketers should know before publishing AI copy
Two official sources set useful guardrails for anyone publishing AI-assisted content.
Search. Google’s guidance on generative AI content, last updated on 1 October 2026, says AI is useful for research and structure, but using it to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. It also reminds publishers that models predict likely words rather than retrieve facts, so outputs can contain errors that need fact-checking. In practice: use AI to speed up drafts, then add your own data, examples and expertise before publishing.
Reviews and testimonials. In September 2024 the US Federal Trade Commission announced action against Rytr, an AI writing assistant that offered a “Testimonial & Review” generator. According to the FTC’s complaint, the tool produced detailed reviews with specifics unrelated to the user’s input, which would almost certainly be false once published. Never use an AI tool to invent customer quotes, reviews or case-study results.
Which AI writing tool should you pick?
- Solo founder writing everything: one general assistant (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Google AI Pro) and the free tier of an editing tool. Pick the assistant whose drafts need the least rewriting for your voice; each has a free tier to test.
- Small team on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace: start with Copilot or Gemini in your existing suite before adding another subscription.
- Notion-first team: the Business plan’s Notion AI keeps briefs, drafts and knowledge in one place.
- Content team producing at volume: trial Jasper or Copy.ai, and judge them on how well brand voice and shared knowledge reduce editing time.
If you are hiring for content or growth roles, our jobs board lists openings at AI companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Notion, and new tools appear on our launches page.

Bottom line
The writing quality gap between the leading assistants is small enough that workflow matters more than the model. Spend about $20 a month on one assistant, use the AI in the suite you already pay for, and pay for a marketing platform only when several writers need shared brand rules. Whatever you use, a human should check every fact, claim and quote before it goes out.
FAQ
What is the best free AI writing tool?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all have free tiers, and Grammarly’s free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month. Free tiers have tighter usage limits, so heavy users usually upgrade.
Is ChatGPT or Claude better for marketing copy?
Both cost $20 a month at the individual paid tier. Test the same brief in each free tier and keep the one whose drafts need less editing for your brand voice.
Will Google penalise AI-written content?
Google says AI content is acceptable if it is accurate and adds value, but generating many pages without value can breach its scaled content abuse policy.
Do AI writing tools train on my content?
It depends on the plan. OpenAI’s consumer plans allow an opt-out, Anthropic lets consumer users choose, and business plans from both are handled under commercial terms. Check the settings before sharing confidential material.
Is Jasper worth it for a startup?
At $59 to $69 a month per seat, Jasper makes sense when you produce marketing content at volume and need consistent brand voices. For occasional writing, a general assistant is cheaper.
