Thinking Orbs is a small React component library of animated status indicators for AI interfaces. Each orb shows a state an AI agent goes through, such as working, reasoning, searching, retrying, waiting or compacting its context, so users can see what the agent is doing instead of watching a generic spinner.
The library has 8 states, 15 variants, 5 shapes (sphere, cube, octahedron, tetrahedron and torus) and 8 render styles, from dots to halftone and mesh. It has no dependencies and is 3.8 KB gzipped, and shapes and styles you don’t import stay out of your bundle. Orbs take the current text colour, hold still for people who prefer reduced motion, and can carry a screen-reader label. It works in React 18 or later, or in plain JavaScript through a separate vanilla entry point, and you can also copy the source into your project with the shadcn CLI.
Thinking Orbs is made by Yogesh and is free under the MIT licence. It launched on Product Hunt on 4 October 2026 and finished #11 for the day with 89 upvotes.
We have not tested Thinking Orbs ourselves. This page brings together its official site, its npm and GitHub pages, its Product Hunt page and the official pages of comparable libraries, and says where each fact comes from.
What people use Thinking Orbs for
- Showing distinct states in an AI chat or agent UI: thinking, searching, retrying, compacting, waiting
- Replacing a generic loading spinner with a status indicator that matches the agent's step
- Adding an animated indicator to a non-React page with the vanilla JavaScript build
The launch story
Yogesh introduced Thinking Orbs as a set of animated status orbs for AI agents, designed with attention to every state and variant. His pitch was coverage: enough states, variants, shapes and render styles to match every step an agent goes through and fit different design styles, installed with a single npm command.

Who Thinking Orbs is for
- build AI chat or agent interfaces in React and want clearer status feedback
- care about bundle size: no dependencies and 3.8 KB gzipped
- want accessible motion that respects reduced-motion settings
- need a full chat UI kit with message lists and inputs (see prompt-kit or AI Elements)
- need a mature, long-supported library: the npm package was at version 0.1.1 on 14 October 2026
Thinking Orbs pros and cons
- Free and MIT-licensed
- No dependencies and 3.8 KB gzipped; unused shapes and styles aren't bundled
- States made for AI agents, including compacting and retrying

Thinking Orbs alternatives and how they compare
Product Hunt's alternatives here are general React UI kits. We compared Thinking Orbs with libraries made for AI interfaces instead. All three are free; details come from each project's own site or repository, checked on 14 October 2026.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thinking Orbs this page | Free React library of animated orbs that show what an AI agent is doing | Free (MIT licence) | No reviews yet | — |
| prompt-kit | shadcn-based components for AI apps: prompt input, chat container, messages, reasoning, loaders and streaming responses | Free (MIT) | — | A full chat UI kit with a general-purpose loader. - Giving compacting and retrying their own states, which most agent UIs leave out
Compacting and retrying as their own states is the detail most agent UIs forget.

Frequently asked questions
Is Thinking Orbs free?
Yes. It is open source under the MIT licence, with no paid tier. The maker accepts optional Patreon sponsorship.
How do I install it?
Run npm i @yogesharc/thinking-orbs (pnpm, yarn and bun also work), or copy the source into your project with the shadcn CLI as described on the site.
Can I use it without React?
Yes. A vanilla JavaScript entry point mounts an orb on any page and can pause, play or remove it.
Which states does it include?
Working, reasoning, searching, background, retrying, compacting, waiting and a base state, with 15 variants between them.
Is it accessible?
Orbs hold still when the user prefers reduced motion. Give an orb a label and screen readers announce it; without one it is hidden from assistive technology.
