Pixel Soup is a Mac app that makes your wallpaper for you. You pick a shape (eleven of them, such as Flow, Plasma, Aurora or Topo, or your own photo), a colour palette and a dither style, from Bayer patterns and halftone to ASCII and Benday dots. It draws the result live on your Mac’s graphics chip and keeps it drifting gently behind your desktop icons, or freezes it as a still image. You can shuffle for a random new wallpaper, or let it serve a fresh one every hour or every day.
Wallpapers can be exported as PNGs at your display’s size, 6K, iPhone size or a square, and the site allows commercial use of the exports. It supports several displays, pauses when windows cover the desktop and slows down in Low Power Mode. The app has no Dock icon, collects no data according to its privacy policy, and runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Pixel Soup is made by Madhav Oberoi and launched on Product Hunt on 4 October 2026, finishing #18 for the day with 71 upvotes. It is sold as a one-time purchase, both from its website and on the Mac App Store.
We have not tested Pixel Soup ourselves. This page brings together its official site, refund and privacy pages, its Product Hunt page and the official pages of comparable apps, and says where each fact comes from.
What people use Pixel Soup for

- Exporting matching wallpapers for your iPhone or for design work
- Getting a new wallpaper automatically every hour or day
The launch story
Madhav says he got bored of his Mac wallpaper and nothing he found felt like his own, so he built Pixel Soup. It makes wallpapers right on the Mac and keeps them gently moving behind the icons, or turns your own photos into dithered ones.
He launched it at $4.99 for launch week as a single payment with no subscription, pointed people to the free three-day trial, and asked what he should add next.
