100X Meter Early

Think Blenny could go 100X?

Give it a push. One tap per reader each day; the meter tracks buzz here, not quality.

What Blenny does

Blenny is a free, open-source app that tidies the Mac menu bar. It gives each menu bar app one of three places. Visible apps (the Surface, in the site’s fish theme) always show. Revealable apps (the Reef) appear when you click Blenny’s fish icon. Hidden apps (the Deep) never show, though they keep running. You arrange groups and order in a draft, apply the changes when you’re ready, and can undo the last change. Apps with several icons move together.

Blenny’s main promise is how it does this. It never moves your pointer, clicks for you or fakes a drag, and it doesn’t need Screen Recording permission. To set the order it needs the Device Control permission and access to macOS’s menu bar layout file. It is a small native app of about 6 MB, built only for macOS 27 on Apple silicon, and its updates are checked against the developer’s own signing key and never install unattended.

The app is self-signed rather than notarized by Apple, so macOS may ask you to allow it in Privacy & Security. Its README lists known limits openly, including that multiple displays are untested. Blenny is published under the Apache-2.0 licence by the developer known as fish (f-is-h on GitHub) and launched on Product Hunt on 4 October 2026, finishing #28 for the day with 63 upvotes.

We have not tested Blenny ourselves. This page brings together its official site, its GitHub README and releases, its Product Hunt page and the official pages of comparable apps, and says where each fact comes from.

What people use Blenny for

  • Cutting a crowded menu bar down to the few icons you need all the time
  • Keeping occasional apps one click away and hiding the rest
  • Organising the menu bar on macOS 27 without granting Screen Recording permission

The launch story

Blenny's developer introduced it as a way to give menu bar apps three places, Visible, Revealable and Hidden, set up as a draft, applied when you're ready and undoable. It was built specifically for macOS 27 on Apple silicon.

Unusually for a launch post, most of it was caveats: the app is self-signed rather than Apple-notarized, some icons without a clear owner can disappear while it is managing the bar, clicking the clock won't open Notification Center until you stop management (the trackpad gesture still works), and multiple displays haven't been tested. The developer asked for specific bug reports on GitHub.

Who Blenny is for

A good fit if you…
  • run macOS 27 on an Apple silicon Mac and have too many menu bar icons
  • prefer free, open-source tools you can inspect
  • don't want to grant Screen Recording permission to a menu bar manager
Probably not for you if…
  • are on macOS 26 or earlier, or use an Intel Mac: there is no version for them
  • only install Apple-notarized apps: Blenny is self-signed
  • use several displays: multi-display setups are untested
  • need search, triggers or hotkeys for menu bar items (Bartender offers those)

Blenny pros and cons

Pros
  • Free and open source (Apache-2.0)
  • Never moves the pointer or simulates clicks, and needs no Screen Recording permission
  • Draft, apply and undo workflow, with recovery for interrupted changes
  • Known limitations are documented openly in the README
  • Updates are signature-checked and never install unattended
Cons
  • macOS 27 on Apple silicon only
  • Self-signed, not notarized by Apple
  • Clicking the clock won't open Notification Center while management is on
  • Some icons without a clear owner app can disappear; multiple displays untested
  • Undo goes back one change only
