Timescale is the company behind TimescaleDB, an open-source extension that turns
PostgreSQL into a database for time-series data: metrics, sensor readings, prices,
events and other data that arrives with a timestamp. You keep using ordinary SQL
and the Postgres ecosystem, while TimescaleDB adds automatic partitioning by time,
compression and fast aggregation over large volumes. The company also runs Tiger
Cloud, a managed PostgreSQL service, and sells TimescaleDB Enterprise for self-managed,
on-premises and edge deployments.

**Renamed Tiger Data.** In 2025 the company changed its name from Timescale to Tiger
Data. In a post announcing the change, co-founders Ajay Kulkarni and Mike Freedman
said the company had grown beyond a time-series database and wanted to build a faster
PostgreSQL for modern analytical and agentic workloads; the open-source extension
keeps the TimescaleDB name, and the tiger had been the company’s mascot since 2017.
The legal entity remains Timescale, Inc., doing business as Tiger Data, and timescale.
com now redirects to tigerdata.com.

Its About page says the founders started in 2015 by building an IoT platform and
then built TimescaleDB so Postgres could handle machine data at scale. Kulkarni
is founder and CEO, and Freedman is founder and CTO. In its Series C announcement
the company said it had raised $110 million led by Tiger Global, with Benchmark,
New Enterprise Associates, Redpoint Ventures, Icon Ventures and Two Sigma Ventures
participating, valuing it at over $1 billion and bringing total funding to more
than $180 million. It reported over 500 paying customers at the time. Today its
site lists customers such as Polymarket and Linktree.

Tiger Cloud is priced by usage, with a 30-day free trial; prices are below. This
profile draws on Tiger Data’s own pages and published reporting. We have not tested
the product, and nothing here is paid placement.
