NEXT Trucking built an online marketplace that matched shippers with truck drivers
and carriers. Instead of phone calls and spreadsheets through traditional freight
brokers, shippers posted loads and truckers found and booked work through NEXT’s
app. It became especially focused on drayage: moving shipping containers in and
out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Its website still describes the
company as intelligent, frictionless freight and invites shippers and drivers to
sign up.

TechCrunch reported in January 2018 that NEXT was founded by Lidia Yan and her husband
Elton Chung, after Yan ran a family warehousing and brokerage business for electronics
shipped from Asia and saw how hard it was to find reliable trucking. That month
NEXT raised $21 million led by Sequoia Capital. In 2019 it raised a $97 million
Series C led by Brookfield, which FreightWaves later said valued the company at
$500 million; PitchBook data cited by FreightWaves put total funding above $262
million.

**Troubled since 2023.** In June 2023 FreightWaves reported that NEXT had hired
BG Strategic Advisors to explore strategic alternatives, including new funding or
a sale. The report, citing The Information, said NEXT had lost $40 million before
interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation in 2021 and $21 million in 2022.
In September 2024 FreightWaves reported that NEXT Trucking and its sister company
Next Freight Solutions were on the brink of closure after furloughing about 18 of
their 28 remaining workers in Long Beach, following the loss of key customers; former
employees and carriers told FreightWaves that carriers had not been paid for some
loads. We have not found a later public statement on the company’s status. Its website
was still online when we checked, but we could not confirm that it is actively taking
freight.

NEXT never published a public rate card; freight was priced per load. This profile
draws on published reporting and the company’s website. We have not used the service,
and nothing here is paid placement.
