Mux gives software teams video infrastructure through an API. Instead of building
their own encoding, storage and delivery pipeline, developers send video to Mux
and get back a stream they can play in their app or website, for both on-demand
video and live streaming. Mux also offers video performance analytics, and its plans
include Mux Robots units for automated video tasks. Its website pitches it as a
way to ship high-performance, cost-effective video in minutes, for websites, platforms
and AI workflows.

Mux was founded in 2015 by Jon Dahl, Steve Heffernan, Matthew McClure and Adam Brown,
according to Wikipedia. Dahl and Heffernan had earlier founded Zencoder, a cloud
encoding company sold to Brightcove in 2012. Mux went through Y Combinator in 2016
and is based in San Francisco; Dahl is CEO. In April 2021 Mux raised a Series D
of about $105 million led by Coatue, with Accel, Andreessen Horowitz and Cobalt
returning and Dragoneer joining, which valued the company at over $1 billion, Pulse
2.0 and Streaming Media reported. The company said the money would help it hire
and ship features that let developers add live and on-demand video without managing
infrastructure.

Mux publishes usage-based pricing. A free plan includes 100,000 delivery minutes
a month and up to 10 stored videos, on-demand only. A pay-as-you-go plan adds live
video and unlimited storage with a $20 monthly usage credit. Credit-based plans
cost $20 a month for $100 of credit (Launch) and $500 a month for $1,000 of credit(
Scale), after which usage billing applies; enterprise plans add volume discounts,
SLAs and 24/7 support. No credit card is needed to start.

This profile draws on Mux’s own pages and published reporting. We have not tested
the product, and nothing here is paid placement.
